So, where do we begin? Naturally, with the hair itself - and how we talk about it, how we experience it, how we connect through texture. Sure, we love the go-to terms like Yaki, Kinky Straight, Body Wave, Water Wave, Bone Straight. But that doesn’t mean we have to stay boxed into them.
Here’s a question: Do you know where the term Yaki even comes from?
Language and History
The term Yaki originally came from comparing the texture of Black hair to the hair of a yak - a Tibetan animal.
At SOWN, we’re not here for language that reduces or compares Black hair to animals. That’s just not the energy we’re bringing.
What is Hair Texture?
Hair texture refers to the appearance of the individual strands of hair. To get technical, it’s determined by the cuticle pattern and shape of each hair strand. The more circular and smoother the cuticles are, the smoother the hair texture will appear.
So, when we refer to Low Texture or Type 2/3 hair, we’re talking about hair that’s naturally smooth with high shine.
When we refer to High Texture or Type 4 hair, we're talking about hair that is naturally tactile and matte.

High Texture
Our most textured hair with visible shape in each strand. This hair is naturally textured with a matte finish.

Low Texture
Our least textured textured hair with little to no shape in each strand. This hair is naturally smooth with high slip and shine.

Commonly known as: Straight & Body Wave Bundles
Blends well with: 2A, 2B, 2C, 3A, 3B, and 3C curl patterns.
